Famous Farm Nuwakot

A landscape of Beauty

Now think of a farm on a terraced hillside, of an ancient fortress and citadel of terracotta tiled roofs and gold finials glinting in sunshine. Below the boutique stay is a fertile valley, a river meandering through it. The scene is given vast scale by the surrounding great green hills – yet actually merely foothills – rising in the north to the snows of The Langtang Himal.

A Restored Sanctuary:

An imposing manor house and two charming cottages form a courtyard, while The Farm itself is a delight of quiet corners and verdant niches with terraces of abundant, colorful, organic crops. Not that it was always so; for once prosperous families headed to Kathmandu for education and a plastic existence, rot, collapse and subsidence had long been the reality.

Historic Setting

The farm, the fortress, and the citadel are hidden gems. Nuwakot Bazaar is a center-piece of the Nepalese story; of the shaping of far-flung tribes and of trans-Himalayan races into a unified kingdom. Staying at The Famous Farm is not just a retreat, but also an immersion into the living story of Nepal.

Experiences

The Famous Farm Hike: Villages, Temples, and Mountain Views

Begin your hike at The Famous Farm, with a short 10-minute walk to the first viewpoint. From there, follow the uphill trail through terraced fields and scattered settlements, reaching a hilltop viewpoint in about 45 minutes. On clear days, this spot offers sweeping views of the Langtang Range and Ganesh Himal. Along the way, you can pause in local hamlets to meet residents and experience the rhythm of life in Nepal’s middle hills. Continue with a gentle 15-minute climb to the Mallika Temple, where you’ll be rewarded with panoramic vistas of the Langtang and Rolwaling Ranges, as well as the Tadi Valley below. The descent begins with stone steps leading to the open fields of Turkechaur (20 minutes), then continues downhill to a local school (30 minutes). The final stretch follows a one-kilometer motorable road, winding through charming villages before bringing you back to The Famous Farm

Scenic Hike to Suryagadi Hill

Step beyond the Famous Farm and into the peaceful countryside on a guided walk to Suryagadi Hill. Begin with a scenic drive to Chokade, followed by a gentle hike through traditional villages, lush greenery, aloe vera and rhododendron-lined trails. Along the way, discover a small Hindu shrine and experience the warmth of rural village life. At the summit, take in sweeping 360-degree views of Ganesh Himal, Langtang and the fertile valleys below. The hill also carries a piece of Nepal’s history, with the remains of a fort built by the Nepali Army in 1972. After soaking in the views and mountain air, descend to Chokade and return to the Famous Farm by vehicle.

Villages, Farms & Heritage

Step into the heart of rural Nepal with a journey through the villages of Bhairam Kot, Bumtang and Kimtang, where traditional lifestyles and farming practices remain an integral part of daily life. Visit local tea gardens, a Rainbow Trout farm, and seasonal orange and kiwi orchards while gaining an authentic glimpse into the rhythm of village life. Along the way, discover ancient Buddhist religious sites and learn about the cultural heritage woven into these mountain communities. Return to the Famous Farm via Samari Bhanjyang, with the route planned according to current road conditions for a comfortable and scenic journey.

Visit to Dupcheswor Mahadev Temple

Depending on your departure time, you may have the option to visit Dupcheswor Mahadev Temple either on the way to the famous farm or on your return journey to Kathmandu. Located in Shikharbesi, Nuwakot, this sacred Hindu shrine is dedicated to Lord Shiva and sits dramatically on a cliff overlooking the Tadi River. Revered as the “Second Pashupatinath” of Bagmati, the temple holds deep spiritual significance for both Hindu and Buddhist devotees. The temple is especially renowned for its association with fertility and family blessings. According to local belief, devotees who perform the appropriate rituals and prayers here may have their wishes for a child fulfilled.
